Merry Christmas to All and Have a Good Night!

So we started a new tradition for Christmas. As many of you know, HWWTS&J is German. We went to Epcot Center this past year and picked up a German Ornament for a special Christmas Eve Tradition.

Here is the splurb directly from Disney :) Dorothee~ you will let me know if this is true, right?

The Pickle Ornament
Pickle Ornaments were considered a special decoration by many families in Germany, where the fir tree was decorated on Christmas Eve. It was always the last ornament to be hung on the Christmas Tree, with the parents hiding it in the green boughs among the other ornaments. When the children were allowed to view the tree they would begin gleefully searching for the pickle ornament. The children knew that whoever first found that special ornament would receive an extra little gift left by St. Nicholas for the most observant child.
T found the pickle and received 2 packs of Harry Potter Trading Cards!
Merry Christmas! Pictures later :)

Hey Christine!
The Pickle Ornament Tradition - to be honest, I have never heard of it before. I just found out that it exists, and several sources say it is particularly famous in the U.S. with German Americans. This tradition might have its origin in Germany, but I don't know anybody who does it. The sources didn't say much about that either, only that it might be from Germany, but at some time it must have totally shifted to America.

It sounds like a nice tradition though - so the kids don't only concentrate on what's underneath the tree, but also what's on the tree.

My mom started the Christmas pickle thing with us in 1999, which turned out to be the only Christmas we did it because my brother moved away shortly thereafter. My dad's family is German, but I don't think they had a pickle tradition.

I hope you've had a great Christmas!

Thank you to both of you for your help. I will still keep it as a tradition as the kids seemed to really like it!
Here's to hoping everyone has a safe and Happy New Year!!!
